Not entirely. St Thomas More High School is a Roman Catholic bilateral boys’ school in Westcliff-on-Sea, meaning it admits both selective (grammar) pupils who reach the required standard in the CSSE 11+ and non-selective pupils, within a faith-based ethos.

For a selective place, boys take the CSSE 11+ and families also complete the school’s Supplementary Information Form so faith criteria can be applied. Non-selective places use the school’s faith-based criteria. All applicants name the school on the Southend-on-Sea Common Application Form.

St Thomas More High School uses the CSSE 11+ for its selective places, a bespoke test set by the Consortium of Selective Schools in Essex. It consists of two written papers – English (60 minutes plus 10 minutes reading) and Maths (60 minutes) – sat on Saturday, 19th September 2026.
