The Sutton Grammar School entrance test has two stages, beginning with the Sutton Selective Eligibility Test. Here is everything you need to know about the Sutton Grammar School admissions criteria and exam structure.
Sutton Grammar School uses the shared Sutton grammar schools’ admissions process, which has two stages. Stage one is the Selective Eligibility Test (SET), made up of two multiple-choice papers in English and Maths based on the Key Stage 2 curriculum, each lasting roughly 40 to 50 minutes, with no verbal or non-verbal reasoning.
Boys who reach the required standard in the SET are invited to the second stage, a written test shared with Wallington County Grammar School and Wilson’s School, consisting of a Maths paper and an English paper. Marks from both stages are combined and adjusted for age and deprivation to produce the final ranking.
Parents register their son for the Sutton SET online through the Sutton grammar schools’ portal, and only need to register once. Registration typically runs from May to August, with the tests held in September. Parents must also name Sutton Grammar School on the Common Application Form (CAF).
Test results are usually issued to parents in mid-October, after which families submit their secondary school application to the Local Authority, ranking their preferred schools, by the 31st October deadline. School place offers are confirmed on National Offer Day in early March. Passing both stages does not guarantee a place, as the school is regularly oversubscribed.
