Tiffin School is a selective boys’ grammar school located on Queen Elizabeth Road in Kingston upon Thames, with a co-educational sixth form. The school holds specialist status in performing arts and languages, and is renowned for its outstanding academic results and its famous Tiffin Boys’ Choir.
Tiffin School was founded in 1880 from the legacy of the Tiffin brothers, Thomas and John, and traces its roots back to the seventeenth century. It became an academy in 2011 and educates around 1,400 pupils, including a large sixth form that has admitted girls since 2019.
Tiffin School is its own admissions authority and is not part of the Sutton consortium, so families applying to other selective schools in the area must register and sit each school’s test separately. Entry to Year 7 is by a two-stage entrance examination in English and Mathematics, set in partnership with Quest Assessments.

Admissions information
The Tiffin School entrance test is the school’s own two-stage examination in English and Maths. Here is everything you need to know about the admissions process and exam structure.
Tiffin School sets its own bespoke entrance test in partnership with Quest Assessments, and is not part of a consortium. The test has two stages and assesses English and Mathematics only, based on Key Stage 2 content. Stage One is a multiple-choice paper, answered on a separate answer sheet that is marked electronically; Stage Two, sat by shortlisted boys only, uses written-answer papers.
In Stage One, boys sit multiple-choice English and Maths papers. Raw scores are combined and age-standardised so that younger children are not disadvantaged, and the highest-scoring boys are invited to Stage Two. The Stage Two written papers are also age-standardised and combined with Stage One to give a final mark, weighted 50% English and 50% Maths, and boys are then ranked in order of their total score.
Registration is completed online directly with Tiffin School. For 2027 entry, registration opens on 5th June 2026 and closes at noon on 4th September 2026. Boys wishing to be considered for a sport or music aptitude place must register for the relevant assessment by the earlier deadline of 6th July 2026. Parents must also name Tiffin School on their local authority’s Common Application Form by 31st October 2026.
Stage One takes place on 2nd October 2026, with parents notified on or around 16th October 2026 whether their son is invited to Stage Two, which takes place in mid-November 2026. Meeting the qualifying standard does not guarantee a place, as the school is heavily oversubscribed with around 1,600 applicants each year. School allocations are confirmed on national offer day, 1st March 2027.

Tiffin School has a two-part priority area: an Inner Priority Area covering homes within 10 km of the school, and an Outer Priority Area covering homes between 10 km and 14 km from the school, measured in a straight line. After children with an EHCP naming the school, places are offered using rank order of test score within the priority groups, including reserved allocations for looked-after children and boys eligible for Pupil Premium living in the priority area. Where a tie-break is needed, the boy living closest to the school is prioritised.
