Wilson’s School was founded in 1615 by Edward Wilson in Camberwell, making it one of the oldest state schools in England, and moved to its present site on part of the former Croydon Airport in 1975. It became an academy in 2011 and celebrated its 400th anniversary in 2015.

The Wilson’s School entrance test is the Sutton Selective Eligibility Test (SET) plus a shared second-stage test. Here is everything you need to know about the admissions process and exam structure.
Wilson’s School uses the Sutton Selective Eligibility Test (SET), a two-paper multiple-choice test of English and Mathematics shared by the Sutton grammar schools, as the first stage of entry. Boys who pass the SET are invited to sit a common second-stage test shared with Sutton Grammar School and Wallington County Grammar School. Each school applies its own standard to decide selective ability.
The SET consists of two multiple-choice papers – one English and one Maths – each lasting around 40 to 50 minutes, with a short break in between, answered on a separate answer sheet marked electronically. The shared second-stage papers are slightly longer, at around one hour each. All scores are age-standardised so that younger children are not disadvantaged, and final selection is based on a combined ranking.
Registration for the SET is completed online through the shared Sutton grammar schools portal, accessible from the websites of all participating schools. For 2027 entry, registration opens on 1st May 2026 and closes at midnight on 31st July 2026; no late registrations are accepted. Parents must also name Wilson’s School on the London Borough of Sutton Common Application Form by 31st October 2026.
The SET takes place on Tuesday 15th September 2026, with the shared boys’ second-stage test on Saturday 3rd October 2026. Results are emailed to parents in mid-October, before the Common Application Form deadline. Meeting the qualifying standard does not guarantee a place, as the school is heavily oversubscribed. School allocations are confirmed on national offer day, 1st March 2027.

Wilson’s School does not have a fixed catchment area; places are allocated to boys deemed of selective ability in rank order of their combined test score, with a number of places reserved for boys eligible for Pupil Premium.
