GCSE results day 2027 is Thursday 19 August 2027. Students can collect their results slips from 8.00 am, although each school sets its own collection time. Schools and colleges get the results one day earlier, on Wednesday 18 August 2027, but they cannot share them early. The date is the same for every exam board in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, including AQA, Pearson Edexcel, OCR, WJEC Eduqas and CCEA.
Results day can feel huge, but it does not have to feel scary. This guide explains GCSE results day 2027 in simple terms. You will find the date, the time, what happens on the day, and what to do next, whatever your grades are.
So, when is GCSE Results Day 2027? It's Thursday 19 August 2027. This date comes from the Joint Council for Qualifications, a group that sets shared dates for all the big exam boards. AQA also lists the same date on its own results days page.
Results day always comes at the end of a long road. The exams start on Monday 10 May 2027 and finish on Friday 18 June 2027. Then there is a long summer wait. By 19 August, the marking is done and your grades are ready.
If you are a Year 10 or Year 11 student today, you have plenty of time to get ready. If you are a parent, you can also use these months to plan. Our GCSE tuition in Birmingham has helped many families feel calm about exams.
The GCSE results day 2027 release date has two parts, one for schools and one for students. Here is how it works.
This is called restricted release. Schools and colleges receive the results on a secure website. Only the exams officer and the head of the school or college can see them.
Schools can now give students their results slips. Grade boundaries, which show how many marks each grade needs, are also published at this time.
The first national figures come out. These show how all students across the country did, and they appear on the news that morning.
Many students ask, "What time do my results come out?" The honest answer is that every school picks its own collection time. Some schools open the doors at 8 am. Others start a little later. Your school will tell you the exact time, so check your school letter or website in the summer term.
Yes, in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, every exam board releases results on the same day, Thursday 19 August 2027.
Exam board | Where it is used | Results day 2027 |
AQA | England | Thursday 19 August |
Pearson Edexcel | England | Thursday 19 August |
OCR | England | Thursday 19 August |
WJEC and Eduqas | Wales and some English schools | Thursday 19 August |
CCEA | Northern Ireland | Thursday 19 August |
Scotland is different. Scottish students sit National 5 and Higher exams instead of GCSEs. Their results day is Tuesday 10 August 2027, which is nine days before GCSE results day.

Notice that A level results come out one week before GCSE results. That means older students in your school will get their news first. It also means teachers are busy for two weeks in a row, so please be kind to them on the day.
Have you noticed that GCSE results always come out on a Thursday in August? That is not an accident. The exam boards count the working days between the last exam and results day, so they keep a steady gap every year.
In 2027, the last exam is on Friday 18 June. Results arrive just under nine weeks later. This gives examiners enough time to mark every paper carefully and to check the marks twice. In 2027, 19 August is the third Thursday of the month.
The same exam board marks all papers for a subject, and marking is checked many times. So the wait may feel long, but it helps to make sure your grade is fair.
Most students collect their results in person at school. You will see your teachers, your friends and sometimes the whole year group in one room. It can be exciting and a little nervous at the same time.
Here are a few simple things to do before the big day:
Read your school letter or website to find out your collection time.
If you will be away, ask your school early if someone else can collect your results for you, or if there is another way to get them.
Keep your phone charged so you can contact your sixth form or college if you need to.
Plan a nice treat for later, whatever the grades are.
Your results slip shows every subject, the grade you got and which exam board you sat. Keep it safe. You will need it when you start sixth form, college or an apprenticeship.
GCSEs are graded from 9 to 1, where 9 is the highest. There is also a grade U, which means ungraded. Here is what the main grades mean.
Grade | What it means |
9 to 7 | The top grades, similar to the old A* and A |
6 and 5 | Good passes. A grade 5 is called a strong pass |
4 | A standard pass |
3 to 1 | Below a pass. You may be able to improve these later |
U | Ungraded |
Some subjects, like maths and science, are split into two tiers. Foundation tier papers can give grades from 5 down to 1. Higher tier papers give grades from 9 down to 4, with a safety net at 3. This is why your tier matters when you read your result.
First, take a deep breath. A grade is not the end of the story. There are always next steps, and lots of people take a different path to the same goal. Here are the main options.
Teachers and advisers see this every year. They can explain your options, and they can tell you if your sixth form or college place is still safe.
Your school can ask the exam board for a copy of your script. It shows exactly where marks were lost. This helps you decide if a review is worth it, and it helps you learn for next time.
A clerical check makes sure the marks were added up correctly. A review of marking sends the paper back to a senior examiner. Be careful, because a review can lower a grade as well as raise it. Your school submits the request, and it needs your written permission.
The deadlines come within a few weeks of results day. In 2026, the deadline for GCSE reviews was 24 September. The 2027 date is not out yet, so ask your school about it as early as you can. There is no priority service for GCSEs.
An appeal comes after a review, not instead of one. AQA, Pearson Edexcel and OCR all ask for appeals to be sent within 30 days, and the head of the school normally sends them for you.
If you do not get a grade 4 in maths or English language, you can sit the exams again. Resits happen in November, and only maths and English language are in the November series. Other subjects have to wait until the next summer.
This matters for sixth form and college. In England, students who are still in full-time education after Year 11 and have not got a grade 4 in maths or English language usually keep studying that subject. So a resit can open a lot of doors.
November 2026 series | Dates |
English language papers | Tuesday 3 and Thursday 5 November 2026 |
Maths papers | Wednesday 4, Friday 6 and Monday 9 November 2026 |
Results for students | Thursday 14 January 2027 |
The dates for the November series after results day 2027 are shared in the autumn term. They are usually in early November, so check the JCQ website for updates.
A resit needs a clear plan. A student who is only a few marks short can make a big jump in a few weeks of focused work. Our GCSE Maths tuition helps students find their weak topics quickly and fix them one step at a time.
English language is the same. The exam rewards good habits, like planning, checking and writing clearly. Our GCSE English tuition gives students the practice and feedback they need to move up a grade.
GCSE tuition
Our GCSE tutors understand the requirements of major exam boards and provide focused support to help your child prepare effectively for their exams.
The best way to feel calm on results day is to prepare long before it. That is true for students in Year 10 and Year 11 right now. Every small step you take this year helps you on 19 August 2027.
The exams run from 10 May to 18 June 2027. When you know the dates, you can plan your revision backwards and avoid last minute panic.
Sit a paper in a quiet room and stick to the real time limit. This teaches you how to manage your time and how to spot easy marks.
Biology, chemistry and physics all have two papers each, and they are spread across six weeks. Our GCSE Science tuition helps students keep all three sciences fresh from the first paper to the last.
Know which sixth form, college or apprenticeship you would like. Then write down what you will do if your grades are a little higher or a little lower than you expect.
The earlier a student gets help, the more time there is to grow. Our GCSE tutors work with students one step at a time, so no topic stays scary for long.

Whatever the grades turn out to be, there is always a next step. Reviews, resits and new paths are all possible. The more you prepare in advance, the calmer results day will feel, and we are always here to help you along the way.
