Ashlawn School is a large co-educational secondary school and sixth form in the Hillmorton area of Rugby, Warwickshire, serving pupils aged 11 to 18. It is a partially selective, bi-lateral school, which means it offers both selective grammar-stream places and non-selective comprehensive places, and is part of the Transforming Lives Educational Trust.
Established in the 1950s, Ashlawn School specialises in science, computing and leadership, and is one of only a small number of bi-lateral schools in England. It has a strong reputation for academic results, pastoral care and a wide enrichment programme.

The Ashlawn School selective grammar stream uses the West Midlands Grammar Schools’ Entrance Test. Here is everything you need to know about the Ashlawn School admissions criteria and exam structure.
Ashlawn School is a bi-lateral school, so admission to the school is non-selective, but entry to its grammar stream is selective through the West Midlands Grammar Schools’ Entrance Test. The test is provided by GL Assessment and consists of two multiple-choice papers, each lasting around 60 minutes, assessing English, mathematics, verbal reasoning and non-verbal reasoning.
Both papers are sat in one sitting, with each divided into separately timed sections. Scores are age-standardised and ranked. Up to 31 grammar-stream places are offered to pupils who reach the qualifying standard, with around 15 places prioritised for the Eastern Area of Warwickshire and around 16 for pupils living within a 10.004-mile radius of the Rugby Water Tower.
Parents register their child for the West Midlands Grammar Schools’ Entrance Test through Warwickshire Admissions. For September 2027 entry, registration opens on 7 May 2026 and closes at 4pm on 30 June 2026. Parents must also name Ashlawn School on their local authority Common Application Form, which is due by the 31st October. No test is required for the non-selective places.
Test results are emailed to parents on Friday 16 October 2026, after which families confirm their secondary school preferences through their local authority. School place offers are confirmed on National Offer Day, 1 March 2027. Meeting the qualifying standard does not guarantee a selective place, as the grammar stream is heavily oversubscribed.
