Chatham Grammar, historically known as Chatham Grammar School for Girls, is a selective grammar school located on Rainham Road in Chatham, in the Medway area of Kent, with a sixth form. Part of the University of Kent Academies Trust, the school combines academic excellence with a supportive environment and strong university links.
Chatham Grammar was founded in 1907 and has long served the Medway Towns as a girls' grammar school. From September 2026 the school is becoming co-educational, admitting both girls and boys into Year 7, as part of Medway's plans to balance grammar school places across the area.
As a Medway grammar school, Chatham Grammar selects pupils mainly through the Medway Test, provided by GL Assessment, with admissions coordinated by Medway Council. The school also accepts the Kent Test as an alternative route to a selective place.

The Chatham Grammar entrance test is the Medway Test (with the Kent Test also accepted), administered through Medway Council. Here is everything you need to know about the admissions process and exam structure.
Chatham Grammar selects pupils mainly through the Medway Test, provided by GL Assessment and used by the grammar schools in the Medway area. The school also accepts the Kent Test as an alternative route to a selective place, so a child may sit one or both tests. The Medway Test consists of three papers covering English, Mathematics and Reasoning (verbal and non-verbal reasoning), with all questions in multiple-choice format on an Optical Mark Reading answer sheet.
The Medway Test consists of three papers – English, Maths and Reasoning – each taking up to about one hour. The raw scores are age-standardised and then weighted (English and Maths count double, reasoning counts once) to produce a total weighted score. There is also a separate extended writing task. The pass mark is set each year so that around the top 25% of the Medway year group are deemed selective.
Registration for the Medway Test is completed online through the Medway Council website, usually opening in mid-May and closing in mid-June of the year the child is in Year 5. Parents must then name Chatham Grammar on the Medway Secondary Common Application Form, which is submitted by 31st October 2026. Families also wishing to use the Kent Test must register separately with Kent County Council.
The Medway Test takes place in September of Year 6, with results issued by Medway Council in mid-October 2026, before the Common Application Form deadline. Meeting the selective standard does not guarantee a place, as the school applies its oversubscription criteria. School allocations are confirmed on national offer day in early March 2027.

Chatham Grammar does not operate a fixed catchment boundary. After children who are deemed selective and have an EHCP naming the school, priority is given in order to looked-after and previously looked-after children, then children with a sibling at the school, then children of staff, and finally by distance from the child's home to the school, measured by the shortest available safe walking route using Medway Council's measurement system. Children living closer to the school are prioritised when it is oversubscribed.
