Colyton Grammar School was founded in 1546 and is one of the oldest schools in the United Kingdom. It moved to its present rural site at Colyford and converted to academy status, educating pupils from Year 7 to Year 13 across a wide and demanding curriculum.

Colyton Grammar School sets its own entrance test, provided by Future Stories Community Enterprise (FSCE), and is not part of a consortium. The test assesses English, Mathematics and creative writing, drawing solely on knowledge and understanding from the Key Stage 2 National Curriculum, and is designed to be child-friendly in format and instructions.
The Colyton entrance test is approximately two and a half hours long including breaks, and includes multiple-choice Maths and English sections (marked electronically using Optical Mark Recognition) alongside a creative writing paper. Raw scores are age-standardised so that younger children are not disadvantaged, and candidates are then ranked, with each school setting its own qualifying score.
Registration is completed online directly with Colyton Grammar School. For 2027 entry, registration opens in spring 2026 (the registration portal is published on the school website) and typically closes in the summer term. Parents must also name Colyton Grammar School on the Devon County Council Common Application Form by 31st October 2026.
The entrance test takes place in September of Year 6, with results released in October before the Common Application Form deadline. Meeting the qualifying standard does not guarantee a place, as the school is heavily oversubscribed and applies its admissions criteria. School allocations are confirmed on national offer day, 1st March 2027.
