Ermysted’s Grammar School is a voluntary-aided, selective boys’ grammar school located on Gargrave Road in Skipton, North Yorkshire. It is one of the oldest schools in England and is renowned for its academic excellence, strong leadership development and outstanding extracurricular achievements, with the motto ‘Suivez La Raison’.
Ermysted’s Grammar School takes 1492 as its founding date, when Peter Toller attached a free grammar school to his chantry, and was re-founded by William Ermysted, whose name it carries, in 1548. It moved to its present Gargrave Road site in the 1870s and partners with Skipton Girls’ High School to expand A-level options.
As a North Yorkshire grammar school, Ermysted’s Grammar School selects pupils through the GL Assessment 11+, with the admission arrangements managed by North Yorkshire Council on the school’s behalf.

The Ermysted’s Grammar School entrance test is the GL Assessment 11+, sat on a Saturday in September 2026. Here is everything you need to know about the admissions process and exam structure.
Ermysted’s Grammar School selects pupils through the GL Assessment 11+, with admission arrangements managed by North Yorkshire Council. The school has changed its admissions test from September 2026; for that sitting the test consists of two papers, each lasting around 50 minutes, covering verbal reasoning and non-verbal and spatial reasoning. All questions are multiple-choice, with answers recorded on separate answer sheets that are marked electronically.
The Ermysted’s Grammar School 11+ is sat on a Saturday in September 2026, with the test arranged at the school by North Yorkshire Council. Children take two papers of around 50 minutes each, with individually timed sections. Scores are age-standardised so younger children are not disadvantaged, and candidates are then ranked; the required standard is defined by reference to the score of the candidate at the relevant rank in the main test cohort.
Registration is managed by North Yorkshire Council; children living in the Skipton area are automatically entered for the selection test unless parents withdraw them, while out-of-area families apply to be tested. Applications can be made when pupils are in Year 5, from April until 30th June 2026, for testing at the start of Year 6. Families seeking priority under the oversubscription criteria should also complete a Supplementary Information Form, returned by late November 2025. Parents must name Ermysted’s Grammar School on the North Yorkshire Common Application Form by 31st October 2026.
