Kendrick School is a selective girls’ grammar school for ages 11 to 18, located on London Road in Reading, Berkshire. Recognised as one of the top state schools in England, Kendrick has a long-standing reputation for academic excellence and has been rated ‘Outstanding’ by Ofsted across its recent inspections.
Established in 1877 and named after John Kendrick, a Reading cloth merchant, the school occupies a striking red-brick Victorian building near the town centre with excellent transport links. It became an academy in 2011 and specialises in Languages, Mathematics and Science.
Kendrick School is its own admissions authority and is not part of a grammar school consortium, so families applying to other grammar schools in the area must register and sit each school’s exam separately. Entry to Year 7 is based on the Kendrick School 11 plus, provided by GL Assessment.

The Kendrick School entrance test is set and administered by the school using GL Assessment. Here is everything you need to know about the admissions process and exam structure.
Kendrick School is its own admissions authority and is not part of a consortium. Its entrance test is provided by GL Assessment and consists of two papers that assess English, Mathematics, Verbal Reasoning and Non-Verbal Reasoning. All questions are multiple-choice, answered on a separate answer sheet, with no creative writing component.
The Kendrick School 11 plus consists of two papers, each of approximately one hour, taken on the same day. Papers are marked centrally by GL Assessment and raw scores are converted to age-standardised scores so that candidates of all ages are treated fairly. Candidates are then ranked, and admission is based on rank order alongside the school’s oversubscription criteria.
Registration is completed online directly with Kendrick School using the school’s registration form. For 2026 entry, the form is available from Friday 1st May 2026, and the deadline to register is midnight on Wednesday 1st July 2026. Late applications are only accepted in exceptional circumstances. Parents must also complete their local authority’s Common Application Form, naming Kendrick School as a preference, by 31st October 2026.
The entrance test takes place on Friday 18th September 2026, with results made available before the 31st October 2026 Common Application Form deadline. Reaching the qualifying standard does not guarantee a place, as Kendrick is consistently oversubscribed; places are allocated by rank order and the school’s oversubscription criteria. School allocations are confirmed on National Offer Day in March 2027.

Kendrick School has a designated area made up of two priority zones, Priority Area 1 and Priority Area 2, defined by postcode. Children do not need to live in the designated area to sit the test, but the priority areas strongly affect how places are allocated. After looked-after children, priority is given to children in receipt of Pupil Premium or Service Premium living in the designated area, then to other children living in the designated area, ranked by test score. Where a tie-break is needed, the child living closest to the school is prioritised.
