Newstead Wood School is a highly selective girls’ grammar school in Orpington, in the London Borough of Bromley, with a co-educational sixth form. Rated Outstanding by Ofsted, it educates around 1,260 pupils aged 11 to 18 and is one of only two selective state schools in Bromley.
Founded in 1957 as Orpington Grammar School for Girls, it was renamed Newstead Wood School in 1965 when the area came under the London Borough of Bromley. Its motto is "Fortitudine Crescamus," meaning "May we grow in strength," and its facilities include music and technology blocks, an engineering suite and a tennis centre.

The Newstead Wood School entrance test is the school’s own selection test, set by GL Assessment. Here is everything you need to know about the Newstead Wood School admissions criteria and exam structure.
Newstead Wood School selects pupils through its own selection test, provided by GL Assessment, taken over two test days. The test consists of two papers covering verbal reasoning and non-verbal reasoning, with all questions in multiple-choice format answered on a separate answer sheet.
Each paper lasts approximately 50 minutes to one hour, and the papers are taken on the same day for each candidate, with a short break in between. The scores are age-standardised and placed in ranked order, and a girl must achieve a combined standardised score of 210 or above to meet the required standard.
Parents register their daughter for the Newstead Wood selection test by completing the Supplementary Information Form on the school website. For September 2027 entry, registration opens on 1st May 2026 and closes on 30th June 2026. Parents must also name Newstead Wood School on their Common Application Form, which is due by the 31st October.
Test results are emailed to parents in mid-October, after which families confirm their secondary school preferences. School place offers are confirmed on National Offer Day, 1st March 2027. Meeting the required standard does not guarantee a place, as the school is heavily oversubscribed and applies its own admissions criteria.
