Founded in 1937 as Bexley Technical High School for Girls, the school became an academy in 2012 and is part of the Odyssey Trust for Education. The Townley Grammar School entrance test is the Bexley Selection Test, shared by the four Bexley grammar schools. Here is everything you need to know about the Townley Grammar School admissions criteria and exam structure.
Townley Grammar School selects pupils through the Bexley Selection Test, the single 11 plus test used by the four grammar schools in the London Borough of Bexley. The test is provided by GL Assessment and consists of two papers, with a mixture of questions on verbal reasoning and comprehension, non-verbal reasoning and mathematical reasoning.
Both papers are taken on the same day, with a short break in between, and each paper lasts around 50 minutes. The questions are mostly multiple choice, with answers recorded on a separate machine-readable sheet, and the scores are age-standardised. There is no fixed pass mark, as the qualifying standard for being deemed selective is set each year by the selection panel once results are in.
Parents register their child for the Bexley Selection Test online through the London Borough of Bexley website while the child is in Year 5. For September 2027 entry, registration opens on 1st March 2026 and closes on 31st March 2026, with no late registrations accepted. Parents must then name Townley Grammar School on their Common Application Form, which is due by the 31st October.
Test results are sent to parents in mid-October, confirming whether a child has been deemed selective, after which families finalise their secondary school preferences. School place offers are confirmed on National Offer Day, 1st March 2027. Being deemed selective does not guarantee a place, as the grammar schools are heavily oversubscribed and apply their own admissions criteria.
