Urmston Grammar School, known today as Urmston Grammar, is a co-educational selective grammar school for pupils aged 11 to 18, located in Urmston, in Trafford, Greater Manchester. With around 1,100 pupils, it has a strong academic record, a proud tradition built on the motto “Manners Makyth Man,” and a focus on pride, participation and empathy.

The Urmston Grammar School entrance test is the shared Trafford Grammar Schools Consortium exam. Here is everything you need to know about Urmston Grammar School admissions and the exam structure.
Urmston Grammar School is one of the five schools in the Trafford Grammar Schools Consortium, which also includes Altrincham Grammar School for Boys, Altrincham Grammar School for Girls, Sale Grammar School, Stretford Grammar School and Urmston Grammar School. The consortium uses a shared entrance examination provided by GL Assessment, so a child only needs to sit one test to be considered for any of the consortium schools. Entry is on the basis of academic ability.
The Urmston Grammar School 11 plus exam consists of two papers, each approximately one hour long and taken on the same day with a short break between them. The papers assess verbal skills, non-verbal reasoning and mathematics through multiple-choice questions, with maths covering content taught up to the start of Year 6. Scores are age-standardised so that younger children are not disadvantaged. For September 2027 entry the test takes place on Monday 14 September 2026.
For Urmston Grammar School 11 plus registration, families must register online through the Trafford Grammar Schools Consortium portal during the registration window, which for 2027 entry opens at midday on Thursday 23 April 2026 and closes at midday on Friday 19 June 2026. Families must also submit their Local Authority Common Application Form (CAF), naming the school, by 31 October 2026.
Results are sent to parents in mid-October, ahead of the 31 October application deadline, with allocations made on National Offer Day on 1 March 2027. Reaching the qualifying standard does not guarantee a place, as the school applies its admissions criteria where demand exceeds places.
