What is the CEM 11 Plus?

When preparing for your child to sit the 11+ it is likely that you will start to come across terms that you are unfamiliar with, and becoming familiar with such terms is essential to being successful in these examinations. One of the acronyms you may have come across already is CEM, which stands for Centre for Evaluation and Monitoring. This is one of the main providers of the 11+ exams across England.CEM advertises itself as an exam provider that ensures fairness in the 11+ assessment so that children receive an opportunity to show their academic skills in a more natural and less rehearsed manner, which is why they do not provide practice papers or release past papers.Whether or not your child is going to sit the CEM 11+ or not depends on which region the grammar school is in. The CEM assessment format is currently used in the following regions:
  • Berkshire
  • Bexley
  • Essex
  • Gloucestershire
  • Shropshire
  • Trafford (some schools)
  • Walsall
  • Wirral
  • Wolverhampton
  • Yorkshire (some schools)

You can obtain more information on the exam format used in the grammar school you are applying for by contacting the school directly or by visiting the website of their local education authority.

Format of the CEM 11 Plus

CEM examinations have previously been comprised of two exam papers, both lasting 50 minutes. Each paper is made up of multiple sections that are timed separately; maths, english, verbal skills and non-verbal reasoning, however, the individual grammar school chooses how the paper will look. That means that the CEM 11+ assessment topics will be the same within a given region, but the questions might change depending on the grammar school. Each paper is divided into the sections above, and within each section is a timed series of multiple choice questions. Once the time for one seciton has expired, the section cannot be continued or revisited. The answers are recorded on a separate sheet to the questions.
