  • Place Value and Rounding: Understanding place value and rounding numbers to the nearest ten, hundred, thousand, etc. This includes recognising significant figures and rounding decimals.
  • Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication, and Division: Mastering basic arithmetic operations and their use in solving problems involving whole numbers, fractions, and decimals.
  • Fractions: Simplifying fractions, adding and subtracting fractions, multiplying and dividing fractions, and converting between improper fractions and mixed numbers.
  • Decimals and Percentages: Converting between fractions, decimals, and percentages. Performing calculations with decimals, including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Solving percentage problems, including percentage increase/decrease and percentage of a number.
  • Factors and Multiples: Understanding factors, multiples, prime numbers, greatest common divisors (GCD), and least common multiples (LCM).
  • Ratios and Proportions: Solving problems involving ratios and proportions, including scaling, direct and inverse proportions.
  • Negative Numbers: Performing arithmetic with negative numbers, including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
  • Powers and Roots: Understanding and calculating squares, square roots, cubes, and cube roots, including working with indices.
Algebra: Building a Strong Foundation
  • Simplifying Expressions: Simplifying algebraic expressions by collecting like terms and applying the distributive property.
  • Solving Linear Equations: Solving one-step, two-step, and multi-step linear equations, including those with variables on both sides.
  • Inequalities: Solving and graphing inequalities on a number line, and interpreting solutions to real-life problems.
  • Expanding and Factorising: Expanding brackets and factorising algebraic expressions, including factoring quadratic expressions.
  • Sequences: Identifying and working with number sequences, including arithmetic sequences and geometric sequences. Understanding the nth term rule.
  • Simultaneous Equations: Solving systems of linear equations using substitution or elimination methods.
Geometry: Understanding Shapes and Space
  • 2D Shapes: Properties of 2D shapes such as triangles, quadrilaterals, circles, and polygons. Calculating perimeter, area, and angles within shapes.
  • 3D Shapes: Understanding properties of 3D shapes, including prisms, cylinders, cones, and spheres. Calculating surface area and volume.
  • Angles: Recognising and calculating different types of angles (acute, obtuse, reflex, right angle). Using angle properties of parallel lines, triangles, and polygons. Solving problems involving angles in circles.
  • Symmetry: Identifying lines of symmetry and rotational symmetry in 2D and 3D shapes. Understanding reflective symmetry and rotational symmetry.
  • Coordinates and Graphs: Plotting coordinates on a Cartesian plane, graphing linear equations, and understanding the relationship between equations and their graphical representations.
  • Transformations: Understanding and performing transformations such as translations, reflections, rotations, and dilations (scaling) on 2D shapes.
Measurement: Mastering Units and Conversions
  • Units of Measurement: Understanding and converting between different units of length, mass, time, volume, and angles (e.g., millimetres to centimetres, grams to kilograms, minutes to seconds, etc.).
  • Perimeter, Area, and Volume: Calculating the perimeter and area of common 2D shapes (e.g., squares, rectangles, circles). Calculating the surface area and volume of common 3D shapes (e.g., cubes, spheres, cylinders).
  • Time: Solving problems involving time, including converting between 12-hour and 24-hour formats, calculating time intervals, and working with timetables.
Data and Probability: Analysing Information
  • Averages: Calculating mean, median, and mode. Understanding when and why each is used in different situations.
  • Data Representation: Interpreting and creating various data representations, including bar charts, histograms, pie charts, line graphs, and frequency tables.
  • Probability: Understanding basic probability concepts, including calculating the probability of an event happening (e.g., rolling a die, drawing a card). Working with probability on a scale of 0 to 1.
  • Statistics: Analysing and interpreting data sets, understanding measures of central tendency, range, and dispersion.
Problem Solving and Mathematical Reasoning:
  • Word Problems: Developing the ability to interpret and solve word problems, applying mathematical reasoning to real-life situations.
  • Multi-Step Problems: Solving problems that require a series of steps, including using a variety of mathematical concepts and operations.
  • Logical Thinking: Developing skills in logic and reasoning, identifying patterns, and making deductions based on mathematical facts.
  • Estimation: Practising estimation skills for quicker, approximate calculations when exact answers aren’t necessary.
Mathematical Techniques and Strategies:
  • Mental Arithmetic: Enhancing mental calculation skills, including quick addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
  • Approximation: Rounding numbers and performing quick approximations to estimate answers for complex problems.
  • Timely and Efficient Problem Solving: Encouraging students to manage their time effectively in the exam, practising quick and accurate solutions.
Exam Preparation and Mock Tests:
  • Timed Practice: Practising past papers and mock exams under timed conditions to build confidence and improve time management during the exam.
  • Marking Schemes and Model Answers: Reviewing marking schemes and model answers to understand how answers are assessed and how to structure responses to maximise marks.
  • Exam Techniques: Developing strategies for tackling multiple-choice questions, short-answer questions, and longer, more complex problems in the 11+ maths exam.
